Personal Development

At Bluebell Meadow Primary School, we believe that education is about more than academic achievement. Personal development is central to our school because we want every child to grow into a confident, resilient, respectful, responsible and kind individual who is ready to make a positive contribution to their school, family and wider community.

Our personal development offer helps children to understand who they are, how they relate to others, how to keep themselves safe and healthy, and how to make positive choices. This includes developing emotional literacy, resilience, independence, confidence, healthy relationships, online safety, physical and mental wellbeing, respect for diversity and an understanding of their responsibilities as members of a community.

At Bluebell Meadow, personal development is woven through the whole life of the school, rather than being limited to individual lessons. It is developed through our curriculum, assemblies, pastoral support, enrichment opportunities, pupil leadership, clubs, relationships with staff and peers, and the wider experiences we provide.

Our personal development helps children to:
  • Build resilience – learning to cope with setbacks, challenges and change and to keep trying when things are difficult.
  • Develop confidence and independence – encouraging children to take responsibility, make decisions and believe in their ability to succeed.
  • Understand and manage emotions – developing the vocabulary and strategies needed to recognise feelings and seek help when needed.
  • Build positive relationships – learning kindness, empathy, respect, cooperation and how to resolve disagreements appropriately.
  • Stay safe – understanding how to keep themselves and others safe, both in school and online.
  • Look after their wellbeing – developing healthy habits and understanding the importance of physical and mental health.
  • Celebrate difference – developing respect and understanding for people from different backgrounds, cultures, families and experiences.
  • Develop responsibility – understanding that our choices and actions affect ourselves, others and our community.
  • Discover talents and interests – giving children opportunities beyond the academic curriculum to develop new skills, interests and passions.
  • Become active citizens – providing opportunities for children to have a voice, take on leadership roles and contribute positively to their school and wider community.

Our Vision

Our aim is for every child to leave Bluebell Meadow Primary School not only with strong academic foundations, but also with the character, confidence, values and life skills they need to thrive.

Our school values of Resilience, Respect, Honesty, Kindness and Responsibility underpin this work. We want our children to understand that these values are not simply words on a wall; they are qualities that should guide how we learn, behave, treat others and respond to the world around us.

Ultimately, personal development ensures that children are given the opportunities, knowledge and experiences they need to flourish as individuals, build positive relationships, make safe and informed choices, and become happy, confident and responsible members of society.

Personal Development Strategy

Our Personal Development Strategy outlines the wide range of opportunities, experiences and support we provide at Bluebell Meadow Primary School to help every child grow, thrive and develop beyond the academic curriculum.
